The affluence in wealth has its advantages and disadvantages. Off late it has been observed that the affluent countries such as USA, CANADA and other European nations have trouble fighting a serious medical condition called as Obesity. Speaking in medical jargon, Obesity is a medical condition which is caused by excessive accumulation of body fat to the extent that it starts feeling inimical impact over the general health of a subject. Although the symptoms of this condition are more than evident but scientifically speaking it is measured by calculating the body mass index or BMI of the subject. Body mass index is defined as the individual’s body mass divided by the square of his or her height. A BMI of more than 30 is considered obese, while a BMI of 25 can be considered overweight but not obese.
In almost all the major medical journals and the research papers, this condition is termed as a silent killer as it has begun to affect millions of people, both women and children and the male, around the world. According to the American Medical Association, the obesity is a major contributing factor towards certain chronic diseases such as Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. It is also a major cause of certain coronary problems and valvular conditions. The increasing incidence of obesity among the children in the more affluent societies is goading the public policy institutions to do something about it in order to save the future of their generation. Off late the American first lady has jump started an initiative to wean the obese children away from the fast food diets; this initiative also aims to in inculcate a more healthy dietary routine which involves balanced amount of carbohydrates and proteins intake and discouragement to use soft drinks.
To begin with one person tends to be obese when his or her daily calorie intake exceeds the required limit and this continues for an extended period of time. Although the amount of required calorie intake depends upon an individual’s metabolism but generally speaking a normal person requires between 2000 to 3000 calories per day. An excess of food energy intake combined with the lack of activity are two major causes of obesity around the world. This type of lifestyle is commonly referred to as a sedentary lifestyle whereby you keep on increasing your food intake without engaging in any other physical activity or exercise. Apart from this the type of food that you are ingesting also plays a definite role in determining whether you are obese or not. It has been observed that people who have a higher intake of processed carbohydrates as opposed to the raw carbohydrates have higher chances of being obese as compared to the ones taking very little or no processed carbohydrates. The processed carbohydrates include pizzas, all types of flours, starch, corns (processed), soft drinks, potato chips and candies and etc.
Some other causes of obesity
It is more than germane to note here that apart from the above causes, there can be a variety of other causes which can lead towards the chronic state of obesity such as illness, depression, eating disorders such as Bing Eating Disorder (BED) and other genes related problems. The increasing use of anti-depressants and the over reliance on certain steroids for performance enhancement are also contributing greatly towards the causes of obesity. Here it must always be mentioned that the over reliance of mechanized transport is a great but an unseen cause of obesity. The people who walk to their offices, schools or work place areas tend to have very slight chances of getting obese as compared to the ones who use transport for the same purpose.
